2019 MXGP OF PORTUGAL | COMPLETE COVERAGE

It’s still early, but two riders have already established their place at the head of the field in the 2019 Monster Energy FIM Motocross World Championship and the 2019 MXGP of Portugal proved that each will have their day over the next few months. That the two riders are Antonio Cairoli and Tim Gajser comes as no surprise, considering the race wins the multi-time champions have amassed over the course of their careers, and their rides in the first six rounds of the long series show that both want to take the title that is open due to Jeffrey Herlings’ absence. In Agueda, Cairoli claimed Saturday’s qualifying run while Gajser swept Sunday’s point-paying motos; all three races were bar-to-bar battles and showed the very different techniques the two have on the bike.

Thanks to GoPro endorsement deals for both riders, we get to see Saturday’s qualifying race and Sunday’s Moto One from their perspective, plus plenty of other details that put their performance into scope. The track conditions are a perfect example; twenty-six seconds into Gajser’s Saturday footage you can see that a number of lines have been cut into one particular corner, but in Cairoli’s Sunday shots, one very deep rut has become the clear favorite. The same can be said about other areas of the track, as the red dirt was powder on top but very firm below.
