2019 MXGP OF SWEDEN | COMPLETE COVERAGE

Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing MXGP has confirmed that Romain Febvre suffered a broken femur in his crash during MXGP Moto Two at the 2019 MXGP of Sweden. This is the second serious injury this season for the French rider and though the full extent and plan for recovery are still to be determined, it puts him in challenging place ahead of the offseason.

Febvre ran in second place during the final moto of the weekend at Uddevalla and was in pursuit of leader Tim Gajser when the crash occurred on a step-down obstacle out of a corner; Febvre’s bike seemed to drift sideways off the jump and landed at angle, which shot him into a high-side and onto the ground. The way in which he clutched his leg and did not attempt to get off of the track made it clear that something was wrong, and medics were quickly dispatched to pull him out of the precarious position.

The crash is shown at the 4:53 mark in the video below…

Febvre was taken to a local hospital after the crash and initial word on the injury was uncertain Sunday evening. By Monday, Yamaha had issued a statement that outlined the injury and stated he has undergone surgery to stabilize the fracture. The timeline for recovery is still uncertain, but it’s confirmed that he will miss the final two rounds of the 2019 Monster Energy FIM Motocross World Championship and will not be able to take part in the 2019 Motocross of Nations with defending champions Team France.

The 2019 season was eventful for the 2015 MXGP world champion, as he showed speed at the opening round but had a crash and ankle injury that put him on the sidelines for an extended period of time. He resumed racing midway through the season and clicked off moto wins in Indonesia, Czech Republic, and Belgium.

It had been rumored all year that Febvre and Yamaha would part ways at the end of 2019, due to a new contract Febvre has signed with Monster Energy Kawasaki, and Yamaha confirmed the departure a few weeks ago. The femur break means Febvre will have to recover from the injury leading into the offseason and then immediately begin tests with the team to establish a setting on the KX450 before the 2020 world championship.

The press release from Yamaha is posted in full below…

Following a heavy fall in the final race at the 16th round of the FIM Motocross World Championship in Uddevalla, Sweden, Monster Energy Yamaha Factory MXGP’s Romain Febvre has suffered a broken left femur.

After finishing second position in the opening race, Febvre was chasing the Grand Prix victory in Race 2. The former World Champion took the holeshot onboard his YZ450FM and led the first 13-laps before high-siding over a single-jump after changing his line to pass a rider that was one lap down. He landed heavily on his left thigh and was immediately taken to the trackside Medical Centre for observation.

The doctors and paramedic’s onsite confirmed that his left Femur was broken and transferred him to Trollhättan hospital where he underwent an operation this afternoon, Monday 26th August, to have a rod surgically inserted into the bone for stability.

Febvre will recover from the operation under the watchful eye of his surgeon at the Trollhättan hospital in Sweden until he is fit enough to travel back to his residence in Belgium. Sadly, the injury will rule the ‘461’ out of the final two MXGP rounds as well as the Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations where he was hoping to take Team France to a sixth consecutive victory.

An update with more information will be shared on Yamaha’s Official social media platforms when available.
