2020 RACE TEAM ROSTERS & POTENTIAL SIGNINGS
2020 MONSTER ENERGY SUPERCROSS SERIES SCHEDULE

The AMA has released the complete list of rider assigned numbers for the 2020 Monster Energy Supercross Series and 2020 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship. Determined by a rider’s performance in the previous season, there is always some excitement to see what guys will be assigned by the officiating group, especially for those that put in an effort over the long series or were given the option to pick a digit that will be with them through the rest of their careers.

Most of the long-term number changes occurred to riders that spent the past season in the 250 class, including Adam Cianciarulo, Dylan Ferrandis, Justin Cooper, and RJ Hampshire. After a lot of back and forth about sticking with the well-known 92 or changing a single digit, Cianciarulo has decided to take full advantage of his 250 National championship and number 9 on his Monster Energy Kawasaki from here out. Cole Seely’s retirement made the number 14 available and Dylan Ferrandis made it his new signifier, while RJ Hampshire has selected 24, the lowest two-digit permanent number offered. Surprisingly, Justin Cooper has decided to make 32, the number he was assigned in 2019, his career number for 2020 and beyond.

It’s always interesting to see if superstition sways riders away from the number 13, especially when you consider the long history of bad luck or injuries that struck riders that used it. That doesn’t seem to scare Colt Nichols as he volunteered to use it in 2020, no doubt as a reminder of his best-ever results in Supercross and motocross.

Chase Sexton and Dylan Ferrandis have the honor of running the number one plate in the 250 class of the Monster Energy Supercross Series, but only if they decided to defend their region (West for Ferrandis, East for Sexton). It’s possible that both riders will go to the opposite coasts in 2020 (that would help them to learn the varied conditions of the full series before of a move to the 450 class in 2021) and if that’s the case, they’ll run their permanent numbers instead.

Despite not scoring any points in 2019, Jeremy Martin, Weston Peick, and Broc Tickle will retain their permanent numbers (Martin was sidelined with a back injury, Peick with facial and eye injuries, Tickle had to serve his suspension). Josh Grant did enough to maintain his permanent number during his short fill-in stint with Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing in the latter part of the Supercross season, but there’s no confirmation that he plans to races in 2020.

Props to Brandon Hartranft, Ty Masterpool, Fredrik Noren, Tyler Bowers, Hunter Lawrence, Garrett Marchbanks, and Jacob Hayes, because their new numbers reflect a very good year in Supercross and motocross.
