2020 ANAHEIM ONE SUPERCROSS | COMPLETE COVERAGE

250 Heat Race One

The first holeshot of the 2020 Monster Energy Supercross season went to JGR Suzuki’s Alex Martin, who was followed by Austin Forkner and Justin Cooper. While A-Mart continued to lead up front, Justin Cooper began applying pressure on Forkner and ended up taking him out for the second place position. Just a few corners after moving into second place, Monster Energy / Star Racing / Yamaha’s Justin Cooper caught a great drive through the whoops and got around Martin for first place. Meanwhile, GEICO Honda’s rookie asset Jett Lawrence began to chop away at positions and entered the sixth place position, while TLD KTM’s Derek Drake secured fourth place.

250 Heat Race Two

The second start of the night went to GEICO Honda’s Christian Craig, but the defending champion Dylan Ferrandis made the immediate pass and took the early lead. Brandon Hartranft and Cameron McAdoo followed closely behind in third and fourth place but began chopping at each other for the podium position. Just one lap later, Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s Cameron McAdoo made the pass and secured third place position. Meanwhile, the whoops claimed another rider as Mitchell Oldenburg swapped on the exit and took Castelo down with him. Monster Energy / Star Racing / Yamaha claimed another heat race win on the night as Ferrandis claimed the victory.

450 Heat Race One

The first 450cc class start of the new season went to Justin Brayton, but only after Ryan Breece washed out the front end and took a handful of riders out. Vince Friese drifted wide in the first rhythm lane, which led to Eli Tomac making an off-track excursion to avoid contact. Following the dramatic first turn, Vince Friese followed Brayton in second, and Davalos sat in third place. Ken Roczen and Malcolm Stewart sat ahead of Tomac and began passing into the top-5. With two minutes to go, Justin Brayton remained in the lead and his HRC teammate Ken Roczen sat in second. Friese remained in the top-three, while Malcolm Stewart tried to hold off Eli Tomac and keep fourth place. With two laps to go, Eli Tomac went low on Stewart which resulted in Stewart going down and Tomac securing fourth place. Justin Brayton took the checkered flag first aboard his HRC Honda and claimed the heat race win.

450 Heat Race Two

Monster Energy Yamaha’s Justin Barcia rocketed out of the start, but Zach Osborne was able to get by Barcia and take the early lead. However, just one lap later, the two swapped positions again and Barcia took the lead. Justin Hill ran in fourth, but after an inside move pushed Adam Cianciarulo nearly off of the track, Hill advanced into third. Meanwhile, Jason Anderson began to close up on the lead group and began pressuring Cooper Webb for fifth. Back to the front, Cianciarulo made the move on Justin Hill for third and immediately began pressuring Osborne for second, which contributed to a mistake from Osborne that put the Rockstar Husqvarna rider on the ground. Hill and Webb began a game of cat and mouse, which landed Webb in the third-place position after a great drive through the whoops. Meanwhile, Justin Barcia snagged the heat race win.

250 LCQ

The 250 LCQ holeshot went to Rockstar Energy Husqvarna’s Michael Mosiman, followed by Tanti and Martin Castelo. Unfortunately, just a few corners later Tanti lost control on his bike and Castelo fell victim to another mistake, yet again. Mitchell Falk then sat comfortably in second place, as Koga and Karnow followed. However, on the final turn, Chris Howell pushed Koga wide and took away the final transfer position. Michael Mosiman took the win after leading every lap.

450 LCQ

Zach Osborne took the 450 LCQ holeshot, followed by Chad Reed in second. Kyle Cunningham and Ryan Breece sat third and fourth, rounding out the available transfer positions. Meanwhile, Plessinger and Tyler Bowers battled for fifth and began closing on the transfer position holders. Plessinger was able to get around Bowers and Breece, but then almost lost it through the whoops. Somehow, AP was able to regroup and squeeze into the main event behind Bowers. Zach Osborne took the LCQ win by finishing ahead of Reed.

250 Main Event

The first main event holeshot of the 2020 season went to Austin Forkner, but Justin Cooper immediately took the lead in the second turn. However, just a few turns later, Forkner countered and regained control of the lead. Meanwhile, GEICO Honda’s Christian Craig followed in third with Oldenburg behind him. Just a lap later, Michael Mosiman made his way into the top-5 and Ferrandis followed, though Ferrandis didn’t follow for much longer, as the Monster Energy / Star Racing / Yamaha rider made quick work of Mosiman and began closed in on Craig. It took a few laps, but Dylan Ferrandis caught up to the rear wheel of Craig and was able to make the pass for third. Meanwhile, Justin Cooper began challenging Forkner for the lead, as he closed in within a second. Austin Forkner then made a mistake on his own and landed in a precarious area of the track. In his attempt to get going again, Forkner remounted his motorcycle and cut a part of the next section. With Forkner further back, attention turned towards Christian Craig a rider that had been speedy through the day. Eventually, he settled in and was credited with third place, due to Forkner’s error and penalty. Back at the front, it was all Star Racing, as the duo swept the top two spots on the podium.

450 Main Event

The final holeshot of the night went to Vince Friese with Justin Barcia right alongside. Just a few sections later, Justin Barcia snagged the lead and control of the race. Justin Brayton made quick work of Friese, and Adam Cianciarulo followed. Then, Roczen and Webb began dueling for a top-5 position, all while holding off Baggett. Back up front, Cianciarulo closed in on Brayton and took second place away with an inside move in a corner. Red Bull KTM’s Cooper Webb made moves on both Roczen and Friese, which landed him in fourth. All this while Eli Tomac sat way back in ninth. Just a few laps later, Justin Barcia went off the track and handed Adam Cianciarulo the lead. Meanwhile, Ken Roczen caught back up to Cooper Webb and began pushing for a mistake, just as Webb began challenging Brayton for third place. A few laps later, Webb was able to complete the pass on Brayton and enter a podium position. Shortly after, Adam Cianciarulo lost traction and nearly went down, which allowed Justin Barcia to re-enter the lead. Blake Baggett then made the move on Brayton and Roczen, landing him in fourth place. HRC Honda’s Ken Roczen then failed to counter a pass from Jason Anderson, and fell outside the top-5. Even after a mistake, Monster Energy Yamaha’s Justin Barcia took home the win in Anaheim for the second year in a row!

I had a feeling about Cooper. He seemed smooth in qualifiers and was hitting his marks perfectly. Ferrandis looked great too and I bet the season comes down between these two, most likely Dylan.

    Forkner gonna Forkner.
