2020 DAYTONA SUPERCROSS | COMPLETE COVERAGE

Pole position. The Timed Qualifying sessions at the 2020 Daytona Supercross are complete and to almost no surprise, the two riders that many had eyed as favorites for the wins in their respective classes were at the top of the result sheet at the end of the afternoon. A very long and deep course has been built on the massive plot of infield grass at the Daytona International Speedway, but unfortunately, the copious use of sand has made it seem like there will be one very fast mainline all the way around.

This will be an important round to the 2020 Monster Energy Supercross Series. Eli Tomac and Ken Roczen enter the night tied for the top spot in the 450 Class championship, while Justin Barcia and Cooper Webb lurk a few points behind. In the 250 Class, we’re eager to see if incoming championship leader Chase Sexton can do enough to keep Shane McElrath, RJ Hampshire, and Jeremy Martin behind him to the checkered flag. The outcome will be determined soon enough…

250 CLASS QUALIFYING REPORT & RESULTS

Jeremy Martin knows what it takes to get around the Daytona track and the GEICO Honda rider further reminded everyone of that with his 1:10.738 lap time in the final session. This is the first time that Martin has been the top qualifier since his return to action.

It didn’t take Shane McElrath long to log a fast lap in qualifying. The Monster Energy/Star Racing/Yamaha rider put in his best time of the day, a 1:10.819, during the first session and held the top spot early. Unfortunately for McElrath, Martin upped the pace in the second session, but McElrath’s time was still second-fastest in the class.

Chase Sexton comes into the weekend as the top rider in the 250 Class. The GEICO Honda rider was quick in practice and a 1:10.947 put him third overall. It’ll be an interesting Heat Race with him and teammate Martin.

RJ Hampshire was fourth-fastest in the class, as the Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing rider clicked off a 1:11.482 lap time.

Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki teammates Garrett Marchbanks and Jordon Smith were next to each other in the results sheet, but there’s a big difference in pace. Marchbanks claimed fifth overall in the class with a 1:11.897, while Smith was sixth with a 1:13.069.

450 CLASS QUALIFYING REPORT & RESULTS

Eli Tomac was by far the fastest rider of the field today in Daytona. How so? The Monster Energy Kawasaki rider was the only person to get around the track under 1:10 minutes. To be exact, it was a 1:09.357 in the final session.

Ken Roczen was quick through the afternoon, evident in the Team Honda HRC rider’s rank as the fastest in the first round of qualifying. Although Roczen was faster in the second session than he was in the first, his 1:10.003 was only enough for second place.

Cooper Webb doesn’t seem to be ailing from his Arlington crash or Atlanta podium. The Red Bull KTM rider was third-fastest in the premier class with a 1:10.590 time.

Malcolm Stewart has been building over the last few weeks and despite a moniker as a Supercross-only guy, the SmarTop/Bullfrog Spas/MotoConcepts/Honda rider was fourth in the class on a track that’s very motocross-y. Stewart’s best lap was a 1:10.712.

Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing’s Jason Anderson was the last rider in the 450 Class to post a lap in the 1:10 range (a 1:10.751), which put him fifth overall.
