2020 FLORIDA MOTOCROSS | COMPLETE COVERAGE

The 2020 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship continued the second leg of the season with round seven of the schedule, the 2020 Florida Motocross. This was the second time that the Nationals have run at WW Motocross Ranch, a massive spread just outside of Jacksonville. With typical deep south weather, a brutal sand track, and lots of action in the four motos, this could be one of the deciding days of the summer series.

250 Moto One

As the first moto of the day left the gate, Dylan Ferrandis seemed to have the holeshot but after a slight mistake, teammate Shane McElrath took control of the race early on. All the heavy hitters were right up front, as RJ Hampshire immediately began making moves as he picked off Ferrandis for second and then took a shot at McElrath in the lead. However, McElrath upped the pace and picked up some time on the rest of the field. Jeremy Martin sat just behind Ferrandis, with teammate Jett Lawrence trailing. Jeremy took a jab at Ferrandis, but was unsuccessful, and shortly after Jett Lawrence made the pass on his teammate and moved into fourth place. After a few laps, Ferrandis got tired of eating roost and made the pass on Hampshire stick. Then Dylan immediately went after his teammate and took the lead through the whoops. Shane McElrath then began to drop, as he would fade back to outside of the top-5. Jett Lawrence made the pass on Hampshire, but RJ fired back. However, RJ then slid out a-bit, costing him the spot to Jett. Jett Lawrence then picked up second place, as the battles continued behind him. Before the halfway mark, McElrath had faded from the lead to seventh place, as Justin Cooper and Alex Martin had passed their ways into fifth and sixth place. Hunter Lawrence then began working on McElrath and was able to make the pass after a few attempts. Meanwhile, Dylan Ferrandis remained upfront with a comfortable 13-second lead on second place and the rest of the field. With a few minutes left on the clock, Jeremy Martin began pressuring RJ Hampshire for third place. Just when it looked like RJ would have the podium position secured he hit a kicker on the lip of a table that sent him jumping through the bars. RJ was able to get up and back on his bike but his Husqvarna was completely destroyed from the crash, forcing him to the pits after such an impressive moto. As the checkered flag waved, Dylan Ferrandis took the win in moto one with an impressive performance.

250 Moto Two

As the gate dropped for the final 250 moto of the day, it was Alex Martin with the early lead, but Justin Cooper pulled him around the long sweeper and took the lead exiting the first turn. Dylan Ferrandis entered second place as they left the second turn and then took the lead from his teammate after the rollers. Shane McElrath and Cameron McAdoo got around Alex Martin before the end of the first lap. As Ferrandis began building his lead, Jeremy Martin sat outside of the top-5 after a rough start. Jeremy made the pass on Hartranft and then began pressuring his brother for fifth place. Alex then picked up the pace and got around McAdoo, and Jeremy shortly followed. The Martin brothers then began reeling in the Yamaha trio in front of them. Hunter Lawrence’s day ended early, as he was forced to push his bike off of the track with a mechanical. Alex Martin dropped to 11th after his brother and he made some contact that resulted in Alex tipping his Suzuki over. As Ferrandis sat 10-seconds ahead of Cooper and the rest of the field, Jeremy Martin closed in on McElrath in third place. Meanwhile, RJ Hampshire made the pass on McAdoo for sixth place, and Jett Lawrence did the same a few laps later. Back up front, Jeremy Martin and McElrath battled for third, as they swapped lines and bolted for insides. Jeremy charged to the inside of Shane after the whoops, but Shane then took Jeremy wide and off of the track exiting the corner. With just 2-minutes left on the clock, Jeremy Martin caught back up to McElrath and took a jab at third place again. After multiple attempts, Jeremy finally secured third place over McElrath. As the checkered flag flew, Dylan Ferrandis took the win in moto two and went 1-1 on the day!

450 Moto One

As 450 moto one left the gates, Adam Cianciarulo seemed to be off to the early lead, but Zach Osborne snuck up and they were bar-to-bar as they crossed the holeshot line. Cianciarulo secured the lead in the second turn, and then Chase Sexton capitalized on a slight mistake out of Osborne and took over second place. Marvin Musquin sat in fourth, trailing Osborne, with Justin Barcia just behind. While attempting to reel in Cianciarulo, Sexton made a few slight mistakes that allowed Osborne to reel him in a-bit. Back in the pack, Eli Tomac pressured Joey Savatgy for sixth place, just as Baggett closed in on the pair. After laps of challenging Savatgy, Tomac was finally able to make the pass for sixth place. Back up front, Adam Cianciarulo came in too hot after the whoops and had to jump over the inside line to the outside, allowing Sexton to close in. Sexton and Cianciarulo split lines and scrubbed side by side, as they battled for the lead. Sexton made the pass momentarily but Cianciarulo immediately fired back and re-took the lead. Zach Osborne reeled in Sexton and the battle for second place was on. Osborne swept inside of Sexton and the two were right alongside through the rollers until Sexton closed him off. Just a few sections later, Osborne railed around the outside of Sexton and took second place. And Zach didn’t stop charging, as he railed an inside rut and jumped to the inside of Cianciarulo for the lead. And in one lap, Osborne went from third place to first with a lap time over four seconds faster than the rest. And as the checkered flag waved, Zach Osborne took the win in moto one after an impressive late-race charge.

450 Moto Two

As the final moto of the day left the gates, Marvin Musquin was off to the early lead, but Justin Barcia ripped around the outside of the sweeper and into the lead. And then Adam Cianciarulo doubled out of the first section and then railed around the outside to get alongside Barcia. The two scrubbed over the double and Adam charged to the inside of the following turn to take the lead. Justin Barcia went down while running in second place and was forced into the pits as his left side radiator was bent along with the rest of his front left side. This incident put Musquin in second place, just behind Cianciarulo. Max Anstie ran in third place, but Zach Osborne capitalized on a mistake and took over the spot. Barcia was able to get back on track but sat in 39th place and over half of a lap down. Back up front, a few mistakes from Cianciarulo allowed Musquin to close in enough to challenge for the lead. Marvin got alongside Adam through the rollers and they both went for the inside line, resulting in Cianciarulo hitting the deck and Marvin taking over the lead. Eli Tomac and Max Anstie battled for fourth place, all while reeling in Chase Sexton. Max Anstie created a pretty fast line through the split lane, as he crossed over the wall from inside to inside and was making up some solid time doing so. It took a few laps, but Tomac ultimately made the pass on Anstie for fourth place. Back up front, Zach Osborne reeled in Marvin and the battle for the lead was on. Zach Osborne dove to the inside of Marvin as they jumped down the man-made hill and took the lead as they exited the corner. Eli Tomac continued to make moves, as he made a pass on Sexton for third place. Max Anstie continued to charge as he got around Sexton and retook the fourth place position over. With four minutes left on the clock, Eli Tomac caught up to the rear tire of Marvin Musquin and started pressuring for second place. After about a lap of trailing, Tomac rocketed by Musquin and into second place. With two laps to go, Eli caught the rear wheel of Osborne and the battle for the lead was on. The two swapped insides and outsides attempting to beat each other to the next corner. However, Zach Osborne was able to fend off the pressure from Tomac and hang on to the lead to go 1-1 in Florida.
