2020 ST. LOUIS SUPERCROSS | COMPLETE COVERAGE

One thing we always like to take note of at every round of Monster Energy Supercross Series is the wide variety of gear and motorcycles used by riders. Companies provide top racers with a substantial amount of money and/or product in exchange for riders to showcase the goods under the stadium lights, and the battle for brand supremacy in the 250 and 450 class, all with hope the investment into race sponsorship will translate into public recognition and purchases.

We’ve gone through the Main Event results for the 250 and 450 classes, then tallied up the figures for a total breakdown. In the 450 class, riders are able to work out deals from different companies for a look that’s all their own (Barcia-Wilson-Anderson-Webb-Tomac-etc) while others will score a massive paycheck from one company that puts them in the brand from head to toe (Roczen, Cianciarulo, Hill). Team-wide deals are much more common in the 250 class, which allows teams to have a uniform look for all of their riders on the track. 

A few takeaways from the final tally for St. Louis. And yes, there are swings in the numbers from week to week, especially because of the difference in 450 class riders…

– Honda was the brand of choice with 13 total Red Riders between the two classes, seven of which were in the 450 class (two Team Honda HRC bikes, three MotoConcepts bikes, Chris Blose, and Chad Reed). Husqvarna was again the most popular pick in the 250 class, with seven total in the small-bore division (Michael Mosiman’s factory bike, two Gas Monkey Energy/AJE Motorsports bikes, three JMC Motorsports bikes, and Michael Lieb).

– Alpinestars continues to hold the top spot in the boot category, with 20 of the 44 total riders in kicks by the Italian company. 

– The push by Leatt to become an all-encompassing brand makes them the only company to be included in each category: helmet, goggles, gear, neck braces, boots. 

– Has the popularity of the neck brace really tapered that much?  There were no riders with neck braces in the 250 Main Event, a surprising observation considering this is the generation that was introduced to the items at a young age.

– FLY Racing is really, really pushing the Formula helmet. It was the most worn helmet in the STL SX Main Events, with nine total riders between the two classes. Shoei was the second-most-common lid, with seven total riders.

– KTM and Suzuki’s presence in the Main Events came through riders that the OEMs support directly. There were three Suzuki bikes (H.E.P. Motorsports with Kyle Cunningham and JGRMX with Alex Martin and Jimmy Decotis) and six KTM bikes (TLD KTM with Derek Drake and Brandon Hartranft, Red Bull KTM with Cooper Webb, RM ATV-MC with Blake Baggett and Justin Bogle, Team Tedder with Martin Davalos).
