2020 TAMPA SUPERCROSS | COMPLETE COVERAGE

One thing we always like to take note of at every round of Monster Energy Supercross Series is the wide variety of gear and motorcycles used by riders. Companies provide top racers with a substantial amount of money and/or product in exchange for riders to showcase the goods under the stadium lights, and the battle for brand supremacy in the 250 and 450 class, all with hope the investment into race sponsorship will translate into public recognition and purchases.

We’ve gone through the Main Event results for the 250 and 450 classes, then tallied up the figures for a total breakdown. In the 450 class, riders are able to work out deals from different companies for a look that’s all their own (Barcia-Wilson-Anderson-Webb-Tomac-etc) while others will score a massive paycheck from one company that puts them in the brand from head to toe (Roczen, Cianciarulo, Hill). Team-wide deals are much more common in the 250 class, which allows teams to have a uniform look for all of their riders on the track.

The move to Tampa was why we decided to bring back the segment for the week. Why? The 250 East Coast region brings an all-new roster of riders to the line and the popularity of certain sponsors depends on the region, so you’ll see some differences in the brands listed below.

A few takeaways from the weekend in Florida…

Honda was the most popular brand in both classes, with six bikes in the 450 class and nine bikes in the 250 class, for a total of 15 (two Team Honda HRC bikes, three MotoConcepts bikes, and Chad Reed in the 450 class, three GEICO Honda bikes, two FXR/Chapparal/Honda bikes, two Phoenix Racing bikes, John Short, Jordan Bailey).

Second most popular bike of the 450 class? That’d be Suzuki, as all four of the brand’s directly supported riders made the Main Event.

That all three of HEP Motorsports Suzuki’s riders made the Main Event had a big impact on the tally, because the team really boosted the number for brands in certain categories, including THOR MX for helmets, Forma for boots, and Mika Metals for handlebars.

Alpinestars is always the most worn boot brand, but they are making progress in the helmet category with seven total riders in two classes. While that might not seem like a significant portion of the total 44 riders, they have more riders than some helmet-only brands.

The most used helmet brand of the weekend was Fox Racing at eight total, which comes thanks in part to their inclusive gear deals with Chad Reed, Ken Roczen, Adam Cianciarulo, Josh Hill, Cedric Soubeyras, and GEICO Honda.

Renthal has the handlebar category locked up. Their Twinwall and FatBar products are used by than half of the 450 class.

I’d be interested to see the brands of knee braces riders are running.
