2021 ATLANTA TWO SUPERCROSS | COMPLETE COVERAGE

Tuesday night racing rules. A few days ago, it seemed like the 2021 Monster Energy Supercross Series was close to decided, but the 2021 Atlanta Two Supercross reminded us anything can happen when the gate drops. A nasty crash by Cameron McAdoo forced a restart in the 250 Main Event. After being cleared by the medical staff and race officials, the Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki rider rejoined the race and gritted out a podium finish. At the same time, Monster Energy/Star Racing/Yamaha’s Justin Cooper scored the win and padded his point lead in the 250 West Coast Region championship.

Ken Roczen controlled the 450 Main Event from start to finish, a much-needed dominant performance by the Team Honda HRC rider. Roczen’s result got boosted by Cooper Webb’s race-long fight to stay in the top-five and a small crash in the closing laps. With these results, the difference between the two riders in the championship is now 13 points.

250 Heat One

As the first race of the night left the gate, Ty Masterpool was off to the early lead after a great start, but Jalek Swoll dove to the inside as they entered the second turn to take the lead. Meanwhile, Jarrett Frye and Ryan Sipes were down after the first turn as Frye got sideways and took Sipes down with him. Masterpool then missed a rhythm and gave up a few positions, including second place to Cameron McAdoo. Cameron then set his sights on Swoll and the lead, as he was alongside and challenging as they crossed the finish line. As they exited the sand, McAdoo took to the inside and took the lead. Nate Thrasher was pressuring Jace Owen for fourth place and ultimately made the pass after trailing for a lap. Thrasher then reeled in Chris Blose, who held down third place, and challenged for the spot. Pierce Brown made some moves, as he passed into a transfer position after running outside of the top-10 early on. On the final lap, Thrasher managed to make the pass one Blose for third place. Cameron McAdoo took the checkered flag first and collected the heat race win.

250 Heat Two

As 250 Heat Two left the gate, Justin Cooper snagged the early lead but Mitchell Harrison shuffled into the top spot as they exited the second corner. Hunter Lawrence and Coty Schock then got around Justin Cooper for second and third. Lawrence wasted no time in pressuring for the lead, as he cut under and jumped past Harrison and into the lead. Seth Hammaker then made some moves and got by Cooper and Schock for third. As Justin Cooper passed Schock, Hammaker passed Harrison for second. Justin Cooper then grabbed another gear and pulled Harrison through the sand to pick up third. Hammaker then went too wide and got into the tuff blocks as Cooper went by to pick up second place. Seth then made two more mistakes in that lap, including a crash in the whoops, dropping him outside of the top-10. As Cooper closed in on Lawrence, Hunter nearly went down in the whoops but managed to save it. Cooper then dove inside, but Lawrence cut under and retook the position. However, Justin Cooper took the lead as they entered the back-side of the track on the final lap. As the checkered flag waved, Justin Cooper took the heat race win.

250 LCQ

As the 250 LCQ left the gate, Ryan Surratt was off to the early lead with Jarrett Frye alongside. Seth Hammaker made an early pass on Robin for third, as Frye then set up Surratt for a pass. Both Frye and Hammaker got around Surratt as they exited the whoops. Ryan Sipes pressured Sean Cantrell, who sat in the final transfer position, and was ultimately able to make the pass and secure the position. However, just moments later, Sipes went down hard and took Cantrell down with him, as Sean had no where to go. Jerry Robin then entered the final transfer position, but Derek Kelly was just behind. Robin then passed Surratt for third and Kelly followed. In an attempt to pass Robin, Kelly then blitzed through the whoops and went down on the last few, allowing Schwartz to then pick up the final transfer position. Jarrett Frye took the 250 LCQ win, just ahead of Hammaker.

250 Main Event

As the gate dropped for the 250 main event, Nate Thrasher was off to the early lead but Justin Cooper shot up the inside and took the lead as they entered the second corner. Garrett Marchbanks, who sat in third off the start, nearly lost it in the whoops but managed to hold onto his bike and stay on track. Hunter Lawrence sat in fourth place, just ahead of Cameron McAdoo as they crossed the finish line. However, moments later, McAdoo got kicked off the lip of a double and pile-drived into the face of the over-under bridge. A lap later, the red flag came out so they could get Cameron off of the tunnel.

Restart

Amazingly, Cameron McAdoo was cleared and lined-up for the restart of the 250 main event. The gate was down and the 250 main event was off again as Nate Thrasher was off to the early lead with Cameron McAdoo alongside. Marchbanks then passed into the lead as they exited the second corner, but was then shuffled to third as Justin Cooper and Thrasher advanced. Justin Cooper was back out front with his teammate behind. Cameron McAdoo was pressuring Marchbanks for third place, as he pulled alongside through the whoops before Marchbanks shut the door. McAdoo then rocketed by Marchbanks through the sand and into third place. Justin Cooper remained out front with a two second lead on Thrasher. McAdoo reeled in Thrasher and began pressuring for the second place position. Cameron pulled alongside a few times as he attempted to complete the pass for second but he would have to wait for the whoops to seal the deal. As McAdoo passed into the lead, he sat four seconds behind Justin Cooper. Out front, Justin Cooper continued to click off fast laps and keep McAdoo behind. Hunter Lawrence made the pass on Marchbanks for fourth place and set his sights on Thrasher. A few laps later, Lawrence carried momentum through the sand and made the pass on Thrasher for third place. Hunter then began working towards McAdoo and just a lap later replicated the pass for third on McAdoo to take second. As the checkered flag waved, Justin Cooper took the main event win after a flawless ride, start-to-finish.

450 Heat One

The gate was down and 450 heat one was off. Cooper Webb was out front early but Ken Roczen beat him to the holeshot mark and second corner. Dean Wilson then entered the picture as he passed into second place. Wilson then slowed Webb, and Cooper dropped back to fourth place, just behind Malcolm Stewart. Justin Barcia kept the pressure on Webb for fourth place, they made some contact after the whoops, but both stayed up and remained in their positions. Meanwhile, Ken Roczen sat comfortably out front with three seconds on Wilson. Barcia went down in the sweeper before the whoops after losing traction, dropping him to sixth. As the checkered flag waved, Ken Roczen picked up the heat race win just ahead of Dean Wilson and Malcolm Stewart.

450 Heat Two

Chase Sexton was off to the early lead in 450 heat two but Marvin Musquin rocketed by as they entered the second corner. Joey Savatgy shuffled into second place, just behind Marvin, as they raced across the rhythm lane. Jason Anderson stalled the bike off of the start, placing him in dead last. While battling through the pack, Alex Ray got cross-rutted and jumped into Anderson, taking them both down. Jason was clearly upset about the situation, as he expressed his anger with Alex before remounting to his Husqvarna. Musquin continued to lead Savatgy out front with Sexton just behind. Chase Sexton began pressuring Savatgy for second place, as he dove to the inside but was unable to complete the pass on the first try. However, just a few sections later, Sexton again raced to the inside of Savatgy and, this time, was able to take second place. Marvin Musquin took the heat race win after leading start-to-finish. Jason Anderson reeled in Starling, who held the final transfer position, but was just a few tenths short of making the pass before the finish.

450 LCQ

As the 450 LCQ left the gate, Jason Anderson was off to the early lead until Scott Champion pulled alongside and passed into the lead as they entered the second corner. However, Jason wasted no time as he jumped by and raced to the inside of Scott to retake the lead. As Anderson checked out, Champion remained in second with Henry Miller behind. Alex Ray began pressuring Smith for fifth place and eventually made the pass after a few attempts. However, Ray made a mistake a lap later and dropped down to ninth. Henry Miller made the pass on Champion for second place with two laps to go. Up front, Jason Anderson built over a 25 second lead on second place and the rest of the field before collecting the LCQ win.

450 Main Event

The 450 main event was off and Chase Sexton was off to the early lead until Cooper Webb and Ken Roczen shot by and into first and second place. Ken Roczen got the upper hand on Webb and took the lead as they settled into their spots. Malcolm Stewart was down after the first turn, ending his night. Jason Anderson made an early move on Tomac, causing Eli to get off-balanced momentarily. Chase Sexton made the pass on Cooper Webb for second place, as Ken already sat over four seconds out front. Jason Anderson was making moves again, this time on Marvin Musquin for fifth place, as he continued his charge towards the front. Justin Barcia rocketed through the whoops and to the inside of Webb to take over third place. Jason Anderson then replicated Barcia’s pass a lap later and got around Webb after the whoops. Eli Tomac made the move on Wilson and then set his sights on Marvin Musquin and sixth place. It took a few laps, but Tomac was ultimately able to make the pass on Marvin and then set his sights on Webb. A few spots ahead, Jason Anderson found a faster line through the rollers and shot past Barcia for third. As Tomac closed in on Webb, Cooper responded and upped the pace, resulting in the pair reeling in Barcia and fourth place. Cooper Webb jumped alongside Barcia through the rhythm, but Justin closed off the line, forcing Webb to roll the last triple. Webb continued to pressure Barcia and made a few attempts but couldn’t make the pass. As the pair went over the wall, Barcia went across Webb’s line, causing Webb to get hung-up and tip-over. Eli Tomac was then able to pass Webb before he remounted. As the checkered flag waved, Ken Roczen took the main event win and got back to his winning ways.
