2021 HIGH POINT MOTOCROSS | COMPLETE COVERAGE

Every race in the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship is good, but only a few are “great.” The 2021 High Point Motocross will definitely be remembered as one of the best of this summer’s cross-country tour. The four motos at the famed Pennsylvania property were complete with different winners, stunning shows of force by some of the best riders of the current generation, and coming of age rides by championship hopefuls.

250 Moto One

As the first race of the day left the gate, Hunter Lawrence was off to the early lead with Justin Cooper alongside. Jalek Swoll dove inside in the second corner and passed Cooper for second. Meanwhile, Frye and Vohland were down in the first turn. Back up front, Swoll was challenging Hunter Lawrence for the lead as he showed Hunter a wheel multiple times. Swoll raced down the hill to the inside, while Hunter got sideways in the outside and fell off-track. And just like that, Jalek Swoll moved into the lead with Justin Cooper behind, as Hunter Lawrence remounted outside of the top-25. As Swoll began to break away from the rest of the field, teammate RJ Hampshire began challenging Justin Cooper for second place. Hampshire charged to the inside line multiple times but Cooper managed to pinch him off and take the line away each time. However, moments later, RJ Hampshire took a great line around the outside of Justin Cooper and was able to beat him up the following hill to take away second. RJ Hampshire continued to charge, as he reeled in Swoll and started looking inside of his teammate for the lead. Just a lap later, RJ Hampshire took the same line he did on the previous lap but this time to get around his teammate Jalek Swoll for the lead. Justin Cooper then tipped over in a rut and fell back to fifth place. Justin Cooper made the move on Jett Lawrence for fourth place and began his climb back up the field. A few laps later, Jo Shimoda then began to reel in Jett Lawrence and pressure the points leader for fifth place. However, Jett Lawrence seemed to up the pace as he caught and passed Justin Cooper back for fourth place. Jo Shimoda then switched his efforts to pressuring Cooper for a better position. A few sections later, Jo rocketed past Justin Cooper and into fifth place. Hunter Lawrence continued to charge up the field, as he entered ninth place. RJ Hampshire suffered a mechanical failure while leading and was out of the race with less than three minutes on the clock, handing the lead over to teammate Jalek Swoll. A few laps later, Jalek Swoll crossed the checkered flag first and picked up his first career moto win.

250 Moto Two

As the second 250 moto of the day left the gate, Colt Nichols was off to the early lead with Justin Cooper alongside. Jo Shimoda was down in the first turn with a few other riders. Justin Cooper then made the pass on his teammate, just before Jalek Swoll passed into third place. Meanwhile, Jo Shimoda’s bike was still tangled with another riders bike on the first turn. Jalek Swoll then charged past Colt Nichols and into second place. Hunter Lawrence went down on the first lap in a corner after sliding out and dropped back outside of the top-10. Jo Shimoda’s bike was finally free’d after they took the chain off of the other bike involved, however, Jo returned to the track over a lap down and with a mangled bike. Jett Lawrence and Stilez Robertson made the pass on Colt and moved into fourth and fifth place. Stilez Robertson then went down and got shuffled back, as Jett Lawrence began to challenge Jalek Swoll for second. Jett looked inside a few times before ultimately making the pass on Swoll after jumping down the hill. Carson Mumford ran in fifth place, just behind Colt Nichols. Out front, Justin Cooper continued to lead with a five-second lead on Jett Lawrence. Garrett Marchbanks charged from eighth place up to fourth after getting around Colt Nichols. As the checkered flag waved, Justin Cooper collected the second moto win, while Jalek Swoll crossed the finish line in third and took home the overall win with a 1-3 result on the day.

450 Moto One

The first 450 moto of the day was off and Adam Cianciarulo was off to the early lead after a picture perfect start. Chase Sexton and Christian Craig were just behind in second and third. Ken Roczen began to pressure Craig for third early-on, as he looked inside and was able to complete the pass after a few attempts. Roczen then began to pressure his teammate Chase Sexton for second place. Dylan Ferrandis made some moves early-on, as he passed his way into fourth place. While, Christain Craig went down and dropped outside of the top-10 after running up-front early on. Back in the pack, Aaron Plessinger was on a charge towards the front, as he passed Savatgy for seventh and immediately moved on to Tomac. Just a few sections later, Plessinger railed around the outside while standing and beat Tomac to the next corner to collect another position. Out front, Adam Cianciarulo continued to lead with a few seconds on Sexton. A few laps later, both Chase Sexton and Ken Roczen caught up to Cianciarulo after Adam drifted off-track through the rollers. However, both Sexton and Roczen made a mistake just a lap later; Sexton got hung-up momentarily and Roczen tucked the front end and tipped over. Dylan Ferrandis then made the pass on Roczen for third place. Back in the pack, Plessinger was now challenging Cooper Webb for fifth and picked up the spot after charging down the hill and into the inside. Chase Sexton went down with three laps to go and dropped from second place to fourth place. On the final lap, in the final corner, a lapper went down in front of Adam Cianciarulo causing Adam to go down just feet before the finish line. Luckily, Adam was able to remount and walk his bike across the finish line before Ferrandis caught up to collect his first moto win of the year.

450 Moto Two

The second 450 moto at High Point was off and Justin Barcia was off to the early lead with Aaron Plessinger and Adam Cianciarulo alongside. Aaron Plessinger then passed into the lead, but only momentarily, as Adam Cianciarulo darted to the front and ahead of Aaron. Eli Tomac shuffled himself into third place, just ahead of Barcia. Meanwhile, Ken Roczen was outside of the top-15 and faced with a moto full of battles through the pack. Dylan Ferrandis slipped by Justin Barcia and into fourth place. Sections later, Chase Sexton cut across a few ruts and pulled alongside Barcia. Chase had to wait a few more turns to complete the pass for fifth, but after railing around the outside, made the pass stick on Barcia. Up front, Eli Tomac made the pass on Plessinger after Aaron made a slight mistake exiting a corner. Ken Roczen had amazingly made his way into sixth place after just a few laps and was already challenging Sexton for position. As Roczen worked on Sexton, Ferrandis pressured Plessinger. Dylan made the pass on Aaron, and then Roczen rocketed past both Sexton and Plessinger in the same section. Ken then challenged Ferrandis for third place, the pair swapped lines in multiple corners, but Ken was able to take over the position. However, Dylan came right back at Ken and re-took third place just a few sections later. Up front, Eli Tomac reeled in his teammate Adam Cianciarulo and was challenging for the lead. Eli pulled alongside Adam as they dropped down the hill and the two made contact in a rut, just before Eli was able to pull up the hill and away from Adam as the new race leader. And just like that, Eli Tomac was back. With ten minutes left on the clock, Dylan Ferrandis had caught Adam Cianciarulo and the battle for second seemed to be inevitable. However, Adam upped the pace and Ferrandis nearly went down after a lapper cut in front of his line over a roller, allowing Cianciarulo to break back away. Just a lap later, Ferrandis was back on Cianciarulo and as the pair battled it out, Ken Roczen reeled them in and made the pass on Adam just after Dylan did so. Dylan Ferrandis now sat in second place with Ken Roczen trailing and Adam Cianciarulo in fourth. As the checkered flag waved, Eli Tomac picked up his first moto win of the year, as Dylan Ferrandis crossed the finish line in second to take the overall win at High Point.
