2021 INDIANAPOLIS TWO SUPERCROSS | COMPLETE COVERAGE

The 2021 Indianapolis Two Supercross was something. The Tuesday night race at Lucas Oil Stadium was complete with excellent racing and some eyebrow raising moments, making the fifth round of the 2021 Monster Energy Supercross Series another must-see event. Here’s our recap of the weekday motos at Lucas Oil Stadium, complete with race results and championship standings at the bottom of the page.

250 Heat One

As the first race of the night left the gate, Christian Craig was off to the early lead while Jett Lawrence got hung up by a downed rider in the first turn. Mitchell Oldenburg trailed Craig in second place, with Moranz in third. Just as Jett Lawrence began making moves through the pack, he clipped a tough block while landing off of a double and went down hard, ending his heat. Meanwhile, Christian Craig continued to lead with four-seconds on Oldenburg in second place. As the clock ticked toward a final minute, Grant Harlan made the pass for third place on Moranz. While running in second place, Mitchell Oldenburg had to bail off of his Honda after endowing in the rhythm lane, ending his heat. As the checkered flag waved, Christian Craig collected the heat race win and switched his focus towards the main.

250 Heat Two

As 250 Heat two left the gate, Colt Nichols was off to the early lead with Michael Mosiman trailing in second. Jo Shimoda went for an early pass for third place but bobbled after his front tire lost traction, resulting in him hitting Hand and them both losing time to the leaders. Schlosser and Max Miller were then left to battle for the third place position, as Nichols and Mosiman checked out from the rest of the field. Jo Shimoda continued to make moves while coming through the pack as he passed into sixth place and caught up to the battle for third. Jo Shimoda then passed Do and Miller while they were battling and moved himself into fourth place. With two laps to go, Shimoda made the move on Schlosser and entered third place. As the checkered flag waved, Colt Nichols took the final 250 heat race win of the night.

250 LCQ

Jett Lawrence was off to the early lead in the 250 LCQ after rocketing out of the gate from the far outside. Mitchell Oldenburg however didn’t make it out to the track, as he was seen pushing his Honda back into the pits. Back to the race, Hunter Sayles went down while running in a transfer position. Jett continued to lead but not by much as it was obvious that the HRC rider was nursing a hurt shoulder. Lane Shaw ran in second place with Camporese trailing. As the LCQ neared an end, Sayles passed back into a transfer position but then went down and took down Meshey as well, ending both of their chances at transferring out of the LCQ. Jett Lawrence took the LCQ win and moved on to the main.

250 Main Event

The drama started before the gate even dropped in the 250 main event, as Jett Lawrence opted out of racing due to his shoulder pain. Which allowed Oldenburg to line up for the race as an alternate. Michael Mosiman was off to the early lead, as a large pile-up occurred in the first turn including Jo Shimoda. Colt Nichols trailed just behind Mosiman with teammate Christian Craig on his rear tire. Meanwhile, Jo Shimoda began his climb through the pack as he battled into the top-15. Mitchell Oldenburg sat by himself in fourth place after a day full of drama. With ten-minutes on the clock, Jo Shimoda had already passed into eighth place and was continuing to pick off positions. Max Miller went down hard in the rhythm section just in front of Mosiman. Michael Mosiman hit Miller and had to slow, which handed Colt Nichols the lead. Mitchell Oldenburg then had to pull out of the race after running in fourth place with more bike issues. Christian Craig then made the pass on Mosiman for second place and set his sights on his teammate in the lead. Thomas Do was running in sixth place but then got a rear flat and dropped outside of the top 15. As the chaotic race neared the checkered flag, Colt Nichols lapped up to fifth place. To add to the already eventful race, the race officials gave Colt and the leaders the checkered flag instead of the white flag, ending the race prematurely. However, a win is a win, and Colt Nichols grabbed another race win to stretch out his points lead.

450 Heat One

450 heat one was off and Marvin Musquin was off to the early lead after rocketing out of the gate. Eli Tomac trailed closely in second with Justin Barcia in third. Eli Tomac went down while entering the rythym lane, giving the position up to Barcia. Justin Brayton was also able to  sneak by Tomac while he rebounded. While battling for eighth, Vince Friese clipped a tough block while taking an inside line and tipped over. Back up front, Marvin Musquin continued to lead with just over a second cushion on Barcia. Although Justin Barcia kept things close, he wasn’t able to challenge for the lead before Marvin Musquin took the heat race win.

450 Heat Two

Cooper Webb rocketed out of the gate and was off to the early lead in heat two. Ken Roczen and Adam Cianciarulo trailed behind, as they battled for second place. Ken Roczen completed the pass for second on Adam and focused on Webb in the lead. Dylan Ferrandis then began pressuring Cianciarulo for third. Roczen then ripped through the inside of the corner before the whoops and made the pass for the lead momentarily. Cooper Webb was able to repass for the lead and hold on to the spot for another lap. Webb then hooked a tough block while going through an inside rut and tipped over, dropping him to sixth place and giving Ken Roczen the lead. Malcolm Stewart reeled in Ferrandis and started challenging his teammate for third place, after about a lap Malcolm was able to make the pass after diving to the inside of Dylan. As the checkered flag waved, Ken Roczen took the heat race win.

450 LCQ

Brandon Hartranft was off to a great start but Gardner dove inside and took the top spot away as they exited the first turn. Brandon Hartranft got shuffled back to fourth place but was challenging Alex Ray for third place. Alex Ray was chasing down Pauli and ended up making the pass around the outside. Hartranft followed Ray and made the pass on Pauli for third place. Cade Clason then began challenging Pauli for the final transfer position and made the pass after a few laps of pressuring. Gardner ended up taking the LCQ win after a flawless ride.

450 Main Event

As the 450 main event left the gate, Justin Barcia was off to early lead with a great start. Ken Roczen wasted no time and went for the lead immediately, as he dove inside of Barcia and took over the lead. Adam Cianciarulo trailed the leaders in third place with Vince Friese and Aaron Plessinger behind. Up front, Ken Roczen had already began to break away from the pack, as he put three seconds on Barcia in second. Eli Tomac began making passes into the top-5. Malcolm Stewart jumped to the inside of Friese before the whoops, but Friese turned into Stewart causing him to go down. Eli Tomac finally got by Aaron Plessinger for fourth place and then began chase to Adam Cianciarulo. Just a few laps later, Tomac began pressuring Adam for third place as the Kawasaki racers battled it out for the final podium spot. After another few laps of trailing his teammate, Tomac dove to the inside and took the third spot away from Adam. Moments later, Ken Roczen came together with Vince Friese while lapping him but managed to stay on his bike. Back in the pack, Osborne continued to challenge Brayton for eighth but finally made the pass after pressuring JB for a majority of the race. Up front, Eli Tomac reeled in Justin Barcia and the battle for second place was on. A few spots behind, Adam Cianciarulo had been caught by Plessinger and Stewart and then made a mistake in the whoops that let the pair by. Cooper Webb then passed Cianciarulo for sixth place and a few laps later caught Malcolm. Shortly after Webb made the pass on Malcolm Stewart, he made mistake in the whoops and went down, dropping him to tenth. Up front, Tomac continued to pressure Barcia but Justin wasn’t giving in. On the final lap, Cooper Webb passed Plessinger for fourth place. Ken Roczen was the first to take the checkered flag as he snagged another win in Indianapolis.
