2023 REDBUD MOTOCROSS | COMPLETE COVERAGE

The provisional entry lists for the 2023 RedBud Motocross have been posted ahead of round five in the Pro Motocross Championship. Several riders will return to action at the Michigan track, which was expected following the one-week break, but the injured and absent list has grown as the summer continues.

The competitive level of the 250 Class will go up a tick with Justin Cooper, Jett Reynolds, and Hardy Munoz back on the starting line, Seth Hammaker racing for the first time, and the addition of Pro-Am Daxton Bennick.

A vicious crash during practice at High Point caused Cooper to experience swelling of his throat. As a precaution, he was kept overnight in an area hospital, took a week off to recuperate, and was back on the Monster Energy/Star Racing/Yamaha bike Tuesday. Longtime wrench Daniel Castloo parted ways with the team during the short break, and Mikey Germain, mechanic for the injured Gulliem Farres, has been reassigned to Cooper.

Monster Energy/Pro Circuit/Kawasaki should have two more riders under the tent in Michigan. Seth Hammaker’s arm and wrist have fully recovered from an incident in January that required surgery, and Jett Reynold should be good to go after a mid-season pause caused by the Moto One crash at Thunder Valley.

Hardy Munoz was carted off the mountain during Moto Two at Thunder Valley and missed High Point but is in for RedBud.

Daxton Bennick will make his professional debut through a rule that allows A-Class amateurs to score a limited number of championship points (40 total) and retain their eligibility for Loretta Lynn’s. The Star Racing prospect will not participate in the Scouting Moto Combine against rivals Julien Beaumer and Casey Cochran, among others, at RedBud on Friday.

Jason Anderson and Chase Sexton, riders capable of running at the front, are among the 91 entries in the 450 Class.

Saturday will be Anderson’s first gate drops of the summer. The Monster Energy Kawasaki took an extended break due to displaced vertebra fractures in his neck from a crash at the Nashville Supercross.

Sexton missed six motos (Hangtown, Thunder Valley, High Point) after a testing crash at Fox Raceway resulted in a concussion and revealed a positive diagnosis for mono. The Team Honda HRC rider has been knocked back to fifteenth in the 450 MX championship but sits second overall in the combined SMX standings.

There will be some notable absences at round five, though, as three 250 Class riders got hurt during the break, one 450 Class rider underwent season-ending knee surgery, and another has committed to the WSX series.

Jordon Smith sprained his wrist and reinjured the ulnar collateral ligament in his thumb in a practice crash during the break. The Monster Energy/Star Racing/Yamaha rider has previously dealt with a complex UCL injury but hopes to race in September’s SMX playoffs.

Team Honda HRC rider Chance Hymas also suffered ligament damage during the break and tore the ACL in his knee after dabbing his leg in a corner. The rookie had immediate surgery and will miss the rest of 2023.

Muc-Off/FXR/ClubMX/Yamaha announced on Thursday that Preston Kilroy had been hurt in a practice crash at the facility and will not take part at round five, but a return later in the season is not out of the question.

Marshal Weltin re-tore the ACL in his still tender knee at Thunder Valley (it was first injured late last year) and sat out High Point. The Twisted Tea/Progressive/Suzuki rider has also been under the knife and will be sidelined for the summer.

Grant Harlan will score zero SMX points at RedBud. The independent rider has signed with Craig Dack Racing to compete in the six-round FIM Supercross World Championship, which starts this weekend in England.
