The Fifth Annual Mini Monsters East returned to Monster Mountain MX Park in Tallassee, Alabama, for the fourth year in a row and over 500 entrants showed up to enjoy a weekend of racing at what we consider to be one of the premiere motocross facilities on the East Coast. Keith Kingsfield and his team do a fabulous job of providing racers with a first-class facility and a beautiful track that’s fun and exhilarating, yet safe and sane, to race on. Rain in the days preceding the event left the soil in perfect condition for the multi-day event, and everyone on hand had a great time.
FRIDAY
On Friday, racers enjoyed plenty of time on the track to familiarize themselves with the soil and obstacles, and to find the fastest lines. At the day’s end, the traditional Father/Son team race went down, and there was no topping Josh Grant and his youngest son, Easton. “Both Wyatt and Easton are riding 85s now, so I didn’t get to race the 65 class this year,” said Grant. “So I decided to give my time to Easton this year.”
Here’s the race video from this year’s Father/Son Team Race, as well as GoPro footage from the Grant team! Who do you think went faster – Easton or JG?
After the Father/Son Team Race ended, the infield on Monster Mountain became abuzz with activity as the STACYC Gromcross went off on a specially made course. A ton of groms on STACYCs showed up to do battle in all of the age divisions, and it is very apparent that the electric balance bikes are changing the future of our sport. Kids are riding on two wheels with throttles earlier than ever, developing balance and skills at a young age.
SATURDAY
On Saturday all of the first motos ran, and the action was done mid-afternoon despite the jam-packed 26-moto schedule. Championships would be decided on Sunday after the second motos were run. Early on, one of the standouts in the 85 classes was Louisiana’s Easton Graves, who piloted his Orange Brigade KTM to multiple moto wins in the 10-12 year old divisions.
And while he didn’t get to win the team race on Friday with his dad, Wyatt Grant showed that the family’s move to Florida for a better motocross lifestyle was a great decision as he displayed speed and style that was much greater than the last time we saw him in action. It’s hard to believe that we witnessed his first-ever motocross race only a few short years ago at Perris Raceway with our own West Coast series. The elder Grant son won the 85 12-16 classes on his HLTN Co. Gas Gas MC 85.
On Saturday night after the racing on the main track concluded, it was time for the moms in the pits to take the spotlight. The Mommapalooza race is the only of the event to reward a cautious pace, and not necessarily the first team across the finish line. Teamed up with their child (there was an all-female team!) the moms rode as passengers. The twist? They had to complete three laps on the abbreviated main track with a glass of red wine in hand. The victory was awarded to the team that finished with the most wine left in the glass!
SUNDAY
On Sunday, we were surprised to see our friend and former factory rider Tim Ferry in the pits. Red Dog was on hand to support his youngest son, Beckett, who was racing in the 85 classes. Seems the Grant boys weren’t the only kids on hand with famous racer dads!
One of the most interesting classes to watch was the KTM Electric Challenge, as two age divisions were full of entrants, showing that electric bikes in our sport are very much here to stay. The sound of the EVs were different, for sure, but the track was far from silent as the little rippers circulated the course.
Throughout the weekend, the vibe of the Mini Monsters presented by Seven MX was high, and we are proud to continue to promote the largest all-minis events in the country. Thanks to the Kingsfield family for having us again, and be sure to catch the Mini Monsters Northeast at Lincoln Trail MX in Casey, Illinois, on October 11-13!
