We first heard about the latest installment of the Red Bull Moto Spy at the 2019 Anaheim One Supercross. Knowing the quality of work that the Wes Williams-led crew is capable, we were instantly excited to see what they could produce when given full access to the teams, riders, and races of the 2019 Monster Energy Supercross Series. And through four episodes, they’ve definitely delivered with a telling, see-all series that shows the Cooper Webb, Marvin Musquin, Ken Roczen, and more in their rawest moments.

There are a lot of elements in the Red Bull Moto Spy series that deserve praise. High-quality video and sound are standard for this outfit (Vurbmoto alumni Jason Crane and Danny Stuart are part of this with Williams), but they’ve excelled with new efforts and experiments.  First is the decision to use multiple motocross podcasts for the commentary, which brings different perspectives to events and individuals that are the focus of the series. Next is the episode length; instead of cramming all they could into a small timeframe for those of you with short attention spans, the filmer crew has stretched later episodes into double-digit runtimes, which allows even more context. Finally, we like the shooter’s awareness of what’s happening on the track and how they place themselves in the right places at the right times. The finish of the Arlington Supercross, when cameras were simultaneously pointed on the track and at Courtney Roczen, is the best example of this and it showed the range of emotions that occur in a short period of time.

The videos are a perfect primer to get you ready for the rounds that will determine the 450 champion. Will Cooper Webb carry this consistency all the way to the finish line in Las Vegas? Or will Eli Tomac go on a run that puts the title in his favor? That’s something we’ll have to wait and see, but it’s certain the Red Bull crew will have a camera rolling to capture whatever comes…
