Being a privateer in Supercross is tough. While professional athletes in stick and ball sports outside of the top 10 in their respective disciplines can still earn massive salaries, the hard reality about motocross and Supercross is that unless you’re a factory rider, chances are that you are putting your life on the line just to scrape by. The thrill of the sport and the potential of greatness is what fuels the fire for riders around the globe, though, and that’s what makes our sport so damn addicting.

Tennessee’s Alex Ray is one of those racers who is in the awkward in-between space in Supercross: he’s fast enough to make most every 450 main event, but not considered by the factories for a full-time ride. Though he had a fill-in gig with the Monster Energy Yamaha team in 2018 for the summertime Nationals, he has since then found himself racing for purse and sponsor bonus money, with small salaries coming from personal sponsors.

For 2020, Ray joins the SGB Racing/Maxxis/Babbitt’s Kawasaki team, which is based out of Maryland and owned by suspension tuner Jason Butschky. From his first day on the 2020 Kawasaki KX450, Ray has been excited about the potential the bike provides him on the racetrack, as he felt that in stock form, the green machine produced more competitive power than his ’19 race bike did. Armed with a solid machine to race Ray has assembled a solid list of personal sponsors to help him get to the races this season, and he hopes to enjoy his best season ever.
