Fox Racing Friday | The Hills are Calling

Presented by Fox Racing

This week in SoCal we got our first hint of winter precipitation and although it was a small storm, it got our minds spinning and thinking about heading to the hills for some epic wintertime trail riding. In recent years, Fox Racing has taken a serious look at the specific needs of off-road riding and launched its Legion line of off-road specific apparel. Last winter we spent plenty of days in the hills exploring with our buddies and having a great time, all the while riding in Fox Legion apparel. To be honest we’ve always trail ridden in our regular motocross apparel paired with a hooded sweatshirt of cold days, but last winter we rode (walked, hiked pushed) in Fox Legion apparel and came away absolutely blown away by its comfort and functionality.

swap, trying to gain balance with those short legs before attacking a tricky section in his Legion kit. (Hey, if you can’t make fun of yourself, how can you make fun of anyone else?)

Based off of Fox’s massively popular 360 line of apparel, the Legion stuff is beefed up and complemented with features tailored specifically for off-road riding. The pant, for instance, features the same great fit as the 360 pant, but with Codura ripstop panels in strategic high-wear areas. The Legion Pant ($229.95) also features the generous four-way stretch panels that make it luxuriously comfortable, especially when you find youself in non-traditional body positions out on the trail. See below. haha!

The best part about trail riding is giving your friends a hard time when they are struggling. My buddy Jason “Hapa” McCune was quick to document my failure on this slippery rock face, but at least I was far better dressed than he…

Perhaps one of the coolest – literally – features of the Legion pant are the zippered vents on each thigh. When the mph drop in the singletrack and you start to overheat, all it takes is a quick tug on the zippers to get a ton of air flow to your legs and, well, crotch.

The right leg features a zippered pocket that comes in handy for carrying anything from your cell phone to car keys, although you might want to reconsider your smart phone if you wear knee braces and there is a hard surface that can crack the screen. Both the vent zippers and pocket zipper pull downward to open, which is the intuitive direction when you’re in a hurry.

The Legion Jersey ($79.95), meanwhile, has a no-frills look at first glance, but it really is much more than a standard motocross jersey. Polartec Delta fabrics are used throughout the body, and they offer comfort and sweat-wicking properties. The most technical aspect of the Legion jersey are the sleeves, which have Cordura panels on the outer edges to resist tearing or snagging while brushing up against branches, rocky mountainsides, etc.

One of the things that make the Legion jersey cool – aside from its subdued graphic scheme – is its reflective logos, which are a nice touch should you be riding a dual sport bike or crossing a highway in between trails.

The most impressive piece in the Legion line, in our opinion, is the Legion Soft Shell Jacket. ($169.95) Many riding jackets we’ve tested have been restrictive, uncomfortable, too hot, or too bulky looking. Not the Legion! The Legion jacket has a trim fit with ample room to ride comfortably without restriction or binding, and it has a couple of zippered vent panels that can be opened up for plenty of air flow. The shell is water and wind resistant, and it was definitely the best looking jacket in our group of riders.

Though our trail riding and testing abilities at Swapmoto Live may not veture into the extreme category, the amount of fun and memories we make out on the trails with our buddies are as good as they come. When you’re wrestling a bike around in conditions that require more body English than normal, you want to be in the most comfortable off-road gear possible. And for us, that Fox Legion.
