Garage Finds | James Stewart Capture the Flag New Era Hat

Share

Presented by Backyard Design

In 2004, the New Era 59FIFTY hat celebrated its 50th anniversary and to celebrate, New Era started the “Capture the Flag” collectible series of hats, which were inspired by icons in sports, entertainment, and music. The line benefited the Stoked Mentoring non-profit organization that helped “at risk” youth through board sports programs. In 2008, Monster Energy Kawasaki’s James Stewart became the first and only motocross athlete to be included in the Capture the Flag collection, and he personally helped come up with ideas for his special-edition hat.

Stew’s New Era hat featured genuine ostrich skin on the bill and front portion, with JS embroidered in gold thread. Gold 7 logos were screened on the rest of the hat, and the inside of the hat is also decked out with James Stewart branding.

Only 250 of the collectible hats were produced, and they sold at retail for $125. Included for that price was a numbered and autographed certificate of authenticity, as well as a satin-lined box that has a mirror to check your look.

To be completely honest, I can’t remember how I got ahold of this bad boy, but I do remember trying it on and wondering if anyone would be crazy enough to actually wear an ostrich skin baseball cap on a regular basis! For 11 years, my James Stewart Capture the Flag hat sat on display in my office at TransWorld Motocross. but since the magazine was shut down one year ago to the day, it’s been stored safely inside a cabinet in my garage. I never really thought about it at the time, but I really value all the souvenirs I have of James’ racing career. I sure miss him out on the track!
