When Ken Roczen’s move to Team Honda HRC was announced in 2016, it was by far the biggest news in the sport. Widely known for much of the prior race season, it seemed like the entire industry waited with bated breath until the announcement was made in September. Roczen had just wrapped his 450 MX National championship and was at the top of the sport, which Honda saw as their way to end a still ongoing championship drought. The time since has been eventful, so there’s no need to rehash all that’s gone on, but the three-year contract extension that Roczen signed earlier this year proves that both parties are still determined to claim a title.
But back to the 2017 preseason! The pairing of the German superstar and the iconic Japanese manufacturer was an ideal situation for all involved, especially Roczen’s personal sponsor Red Bull, and the energy drink giant came up with a video project that has amassed nearly one million views since its premiere.
At the time, Roczen worked with Santa Barbara-based trainer Peter Park and conducted his preseason boot camp at Castillo Ranch. Located on California’s Central Coast, the private facility features a professionally built Supercross track and dozens of free ride spots that have been used in photos and video projects, namely the Fox Racing Terrafirma film series. Jeremy McGrath’s segment in the original video is one of the most popular in the history of the sport, so Red Bull convinced Honda to pull one of MC’s old steel frame CR250R bikes out of storage and prep it, while Fox Racing recreated a gearset on modern materials.
While everyone can watch the video for free, only a few got the media kits. Somehow, someway, Red Bull found blank VHS tapes and printed boxes that look just like the original Terrafirma. Does the tape work? I have no idea because it’s 2019 and I don’t know anyone with a VCR, but stuck to the front of the tape was a black USB drive that has some of the photos shot by Garth Milan which is in the gallery below. This is one of the most creative media kits Red Bull has put together, right there with the custom-painted V2 they sent to us a few weeks ago to hype the Straight Rhythm.
