Joey Savatgy has announced the extent of the injury he suffered at the 2019 AUS-X Open Supercross in Australia. The JGRMX/Yoshimura/Suzuki Factory Racing rider said that a “freak deal” while setting up for a rhythm section (we’ve been told he clicked into a false neutral while exiting the corner) caused him to eject from the bike and he fractured the heel and the navicular bone in his foot.

Trackside medics quickly tended to Savatgy at the event and he was then taken to a Melbourne hospital, where doctors performed a necessary surgery on Sunday morning to set the fractured bones. With a fresh surgical wound and 12-plus hour flight from Australia back to the United States, there were concerns about complications due to the pressure in the plane, which Savatgy explained.

“I had a freak deal and had surgery there for the heel and navicular in my foot,” he shared in an Instagram story post. “The surgery there was Sunday morning and I was there from Sunday to Thursday. Flew home Thursday with a nurse that I had to find and hire to fly home to make sure I was safe. I landed Thursday morning at LAX (Los Angeles) at about 9:30 in the morning and by three o’clock Thursday afternoon, I was in Beverly Hills getting surgery.

“The doctor is pretty happy with how the surgery went,” Savatgy continued. “So now we’re on the road to recovery, onwards and upwards. I’ll go in four weeks to get the pins out and then I can start working on range of motion stuff. It’ll probably be six to eight weeks until I can do weight-bearing stuff.”

The type of injury and the expected timeframe will sideline Savatgy for the majority, if not the entirety of the 2020 Monster Energy Supercross Series, which is a major setback for a rider that had just signed a contract with the JGRMX team after a lengthy and uncertain offseason. Despite the problem, Savatgy showed signs of positivity by saying, “All things considered, it’s not terrible. It could be a lot worse, for sure. That’s where we’re at.”

Check back later this week for an interview with Savatgy with more details about the injury and his recovery.

Coincidentally, the JGRMX/Yoshimura/Suzuki Factory Racing team announced the addition of two more riders for the 2020 season this week. Fredrik Noren will contest the full season, Supercross and motocross, in the 450 class while Jimmy Decotis will race the 250 East Coast region with select appearances in the 450 class.
