Leatt Moto 5.5 Flexlock Boots Launch Day

Leatt invited Swapmoto Live to join them at Los Angeles County Raceway for the launch of its new Moto 5.5 Flexlock Boot. Known best as the brand that basically created the motocross neck brace category, Leatt has been broadening its horizons in recent years and now includes boots in its catalog. Now, riders can wear Leatt head-to-toe, just like SmarTop/Bullfrog Spas/Motoconcepts/Honda rider Justin Hill. We recruited AMSOIL Swapmoto Race Series regular Greg Starkey to help us put the new boots, as well as the entire Leatt apparel line, to the test for us.

The Leatt Moto 5.5 Flexlock Boot retails for $389.99 and is available in sizes 7-13. The most unique feature of the boot is the FlexLock system that’s claimed to reduce ankle forces by up to 37% and knee forces by up to 35% upon impact when compared to an industry-leading competitor boot.

The ankle areas of the boot boast 3D-shaped impact foam with a heel grip design for stability, while a low-profile toe-box offers a wide fit and a smooth profile to slip easily beneath the shift lever. The sole of the boot features a dual-density compound and an extended footpeg riding zone for the arch. The steel shank is reinforced and CE certified.

Our tester Greg Starkey admitted that he was a bit skeptical about the new Leatt Moto 5.5 Flexlock Boot before he rode in it as he knew of Leatt previously as only a neck brace manufacturer, but he was won over by the fit and feel of the boot in short order. The boot has a wide design that can accomodate all foot shapes, and the interior of the boot is nicely padded and very comfortable, especially in the ankle area. The traditional style (non-bootie) style of the boot makes it easy to slip into, and the four buckles are easy to adjust and operate.

The Flexlock structure of the boot allows for plenty of mobility and movement from the get-go, yet structurally prevents your ankle from being twisted or hyperextended. The exo skeleton looks quite complicated, but it doesn’t suffer from any friction or squeaking like be imagined it might. We have yet to see if the external structure of the Flexlock can become jammed with mud or a rock, though. For now, our first impression of the Leatt Moto 5.5 Flexlock Boot is that for under $400, it is an excellent value due to its comfort, high level of support, and protection technology.
