Marvin Musquin Will Miss 2020 SX Season

On Friday afternoon, Marvin Musquin and the Red Bull KTM team announced that the rider will miss the entire 2020 Monster Energy Supercross Series due to a recent knee injury that required surgery. The incident occurred in a rhythm section at the Red Bull KTM test track in Southern California, where Musquin has spent much of his time recently to test with the team, and the impact left Musquin with significant damage to his knee.

This is the latest in a series of knee issues for the French rider, as he has suffered three significant injuries to either knee in the past 14 months (a knee injury late in 2018 nearly kept him from racing at the start of 2019, a crash in the last moto of the summer at the 2019 Ironman Motocross required extensive recovery in the offseason, and now this) and multiple other instances throughout his career.

A winner of two 450 SX Main Events in 2019 and near the top of the results sheet more often than not in recent years, Musquin was widely expected to be in the chase for the championship in 2020. He had signed a two-year contract extension with Red Bull KTM for 2020 and 2021 this past summer, a deal that could be the final of his professional career.

Red Bull KTM is historically a two-rider 450 team, so it will be likely that a fill-in rider is solicited for the seventeen-round series that starts in January.

The press release from Red Bull KTM and statement from Marvin Musquin are both posted in full below…

Not the kind of news I’m excited to share with you guys… I was really happy to be back on the bike riding after being injured at the end of the Motocross season and starting to train for Supercross. Unfortunately, I had an incident at the KTM test track and ultimately over-jumped a jump that had a very big impact on my legs when I landed, injuring my left knee. I had it evaluated by several doctors and it was determined that my knee required surgery. It’s devastating news to me as I was really looking forward to racing Supercross, but I will take the time needed to recover properly with my main focus being to return when I am strong enough to win races. A big thanks to my team @ktmusa for supporting me in this tough time. I feel terribly sorry for them and all my sponsors for not being able to represent them on the track for the 2020 AMA SX season. But we will be back 👊🏼

The Red Bull KTM Factory Racing Team regretfully announces that Marvin Musquin has sustained a leg injury that required surgery and he will miss the entire 2020 AMA Supercross Championship.

Musquin injured his knee when he cased a jump at KTM’s test track facility in Corona, California while preparing for the upcoming Supercross season. He returned to France this week and successfully underwent surgery to repair his left knee and will now concentrate on intense therapy to properly heal over the next few months.

Musquin: “It’s tough to share this disappointing news. I was really happy to be back on the bike riding after being injured at the end of the Motocross season and starting to train for Supercross. Unfortunately, I had an incident at the KTM test track and ultimately over-jumped a jump that had a very big impact on my legs when I landed, injuring my left knee. I had it evaluated by several doctors and it was determined that my knee required surgery. It’s devastating news to me as I was really looking forward to racing Supercross, but I will take the time needed to recover properly with my main focus being to return when I am strong enough to win races.”

Red Bull KTM Team Manager, Ian Harrison: “We want Marvin to take the time he needs to fully recover. He is a big part of our program and we have a good working relationship so we understand how disappointing this is for him and the whole team. We are here to support him and look forward to him making a return to racing when he is 100% ready.”

The entire Red Bull KTM Factory Racing Team wishes him a speedy recovery.
