Red Bull has dropped episode five of the Moto Spy series for the 2020 season and there’s plenty to see in the 20-minute plus video. Voiceovers from media members bring context to the clips and drum up the anticipation, but it’s the personal moments filmed at the practice tracks, in the gym, or at home that really reinforces what we see play out over the course of 17 weekends with defending 450 champion Cooper Webb, a rebuilt Ken Roczen, and the young roster of the Troy Lee Designs/Red Bull/KTM team.

INTRODUCTION

Like episode five, the first few minutes of the video are spent bringing us back up to speed on recent developments in the sport. With no racing in the immediate future, Ken Roczen used the time as a break from the usual grind of training and practice, and instead did the tasks around the house that you get too busy to do during race season. The Team Honda HRC rider seemed at ease in the footage, which he shot for the video or had posted on social media, despite being one of the guys with so much at stake. Roczen’s best ever shot at a Supercross title is uncertain, but he knows that stressing about the situation will not bring a resolution.

The quiet life in Florida is nice to see, but racing is the reason for the whole series and soon we’re reminded of what Eli Tomac, Roczen, and Cooper Webb went through the first part of the year, including Roczen’s return to the top step of the podium, Tomac’s consistency, and Webb’s wins and hard slam in Arlington.

JETT LAWRENCE

Jett Lawrence has a plan for the future. Despite being a rookie, the GEICO Honda rider knows that he can still make an impact on motocross in more ways than just winning, which is something the people in his inner circle agree with. Well-dressed and loaded with personality, the kid invited the film crew to tag along for a day in the life, which included a meeting with a design group in Orange County that may help him establish a clothing brand and then an appearance on our Swapmoto Live Show. The Lawrence family sold everything they had in Australia for the boys to race in Europe and the United States, sacrifices that Jett won’t let go to waste. HAMPSHIRE & BROWN

Although RJ Hampshire and Pierce Brown are at different points in their careers, the objective is the same: be a winner in the 250 Class. Hampshire has been at this for a while and is established in the small-bore division, so his move to the Rockstar Energy Husqvarna Factory Racing team was to get on Aldon Baker’s program and make the most of the opportunity. Brown, on the other hand, is still in his first year of pro racing and is being closely watched over by everyone at the Troy Lee Designs/Red Bull/KTM team. The two riders have raw speed and plenty of potential, but still have their share of issues to overcome, including Hampshire’s knee injury and Brown’s tendency to lay the bike down.

DAYTONA

The Atlanta-Daytona races will be remembered as defining moments in the sport. At Atlanta, Roczen rose to the challenge and claimed a crucial 450 Main Event win, which tied him with Tomac for the top spot in the championship, while Webb fought to a podium finish one week after what should have been a season-ending spill.

We didn’t know it at the time, but Daytona was the last race to be held under “normal circumstances” for who knows how long. Roczen’s early lead in the 450 Main Event and Tomac’s late charge set up a thrilling rush to the checkered flag that ended with Tomac taking the win, while Webb put in another big effort to snag the last spot on the podium. Roczen’s was optimistic on the podium while Webb had his usual post-race thousand-yard stare; you could see that both riders were already looking towards the next weekend as their chance for redemption.

CLOSING

Where do we go from here? That’s the big question right now and the final few minutes of the video are spent discussing the possible scenarios to complete the season. Right now there are two options: race in the Fall, as was originally planned and discussed, or somehow pull together a very tight program and hold the remaining seven races in Arizona. A final decision on the matter should be made and announced any day.
