Storme Hawks came away with the championship in the 85 8-11 class at the Seven MX Mini Major, and we caught up with him in the pits to see what the young man is all about. We were impressed with his confidence and outgoing nature, and he will definitely be one we will keep our eyes on in the future!

Is this your first Mini Major or have you done one before?

This is my second Mini Major and they are always a good time!

Tell me your motocross story, how did you get involved in racing and riding?

I mainly got involved from my brothers and my dad. My dad would race when he was younger and my brother would just ride 110s around. We went to a race and I did one race then we took a year off. I just came back and really wanted to go ride!

What is it about riding that you like? I’m assuming you play other sports.

No, I don’t play any other sports. I like dirtbikes so much. It’s just the only thing I’m really good at! I tried football, basketball…I’m not good at anything but dirtbikes. I love it when you hit a big jump and you come down the air and then my friends are like “Woah! You hit that?” It’s just really fun to be and its the only thing I know how to do well.

How seriously do you take it? Do you train? Do you have a riding coach?

Yeah, I train. I tried to have a riding coach, but I train once a week and ride three or four times a week.

So your parents are hugely invested in your program if they bring you to the track three times a week!

Yeah, my mom will take Thursdays off and my dad will get off work. My dad works are Glen Helen so I can go there and ride all the time. I mainly come here to State Fair MX, Glen Helen, and Perris.

Wow. Glen Helen, that’s the track that will make a man out of you!

Yeah! I ride there just about every Thursday.

Why do you choose KTMs?

I choose KTMs because when I hop on this bike, I just trust it. I know that the front wheel is not going to come flying off. I trust the bike thoroughly and I just can’t get that with other bikes.

Who is the biggest supporter of your racing program?

I can’t choose. My mom and my dad!

What grade are you in at school?

I’m in seventh grade.

Are you going to public school or are you doing the homeschool thing already?

It’s basically a public school, it’s a charter school. I go to school in person.

How seriously do you take your schooling? Do you think it’s a pain in the butt or do you realize it is important?

Well I know it’s important because if I have bad grades then I can’t ride! My big goal this year is to get my A+ LL on the side of my graphics when I go to Loretta’s. That’s what I’m going for this year.

What are your favorite subjects in school?

I like to do Spanish. PE is fun. I basically like any of them, I really don’t hate any of my classes.

Who is your riding inspiration?

My favorite rider is Ryan Villopoto. I just loved how whenever he would go out he would always beat the whole field. I forget what year but when he beat everyone on a 250 that was the best.

What do you think of the Mini Major?

I really like this. This is my second year winning. So I really like it. I did it the year they gave out the mountain bikes, so that got stolen out of my garage pretty quickly. This race is just fun, there’s no big bikes you have to worry about. It’s just little bikes and you still get good ruts.

What do you think of State Fair MX?

I really like this track, I grew up riding the moto X kids. So this track feels like home to me. I really like the dirt and everything, it’s just a cool track.
