Two-Stroke Tuesday | Coty Schock’s Yamaha YZ250

By Coty Schock

My name is Coty Schock and I’m from Dover, Delaware. I got into riding for fun because my dad always had motorcycles and that’s just what we did until I saw outdoor motocross on TV. I couldn’t take my eyes off the set, and I knew right then that  I  wanted to race dirt bikes. Growing up racing, I’ve always followed a lot of people from California on social media because that’s where the heart of the sport is! I’ve always dreamed of visiting Southern California and riding with the pros, and this summer – 15 years later – my dream came true!

My dream was realized when I got a phone call from my friends at Boyesen Engineering. They have sponsored me for about eight years now and to me, they have become family! I’ve been representing them for some time now and they are always asking me, “What could be better?”  That’s what I love about them; they are always searching to better themselves and their products in their quest to simply be the best!

Anyway, Boyesen asked me if I wanted to do a photoshoot for its new line of clutch covers and I immediately replied, “Yes when?” After some planning, we made the trip into a Boyesen/FXR deal and I was stoked! When I got out there I was able to ride Carson Mumford’s place along with Milestone MX, Perris Raceway and Glen Helen. Spending seven days on a dirtbike was a blast for me and to finally experience the Cali lifestyle was surreal!

Spending time with Andy White from FXR Racing, Mike Brown, Kris Keefer, the Swapmoto Live and Insideline Connect guys was super chill and we had a great group of guys! Going out to California for the first time was awesome experience itself. Best of all, the Swapmoto Live guys loaned me their 2019 Yamaha YZ250 test bike so that I could race the Fasthouse Two-Stroke World Championships at Glen Helen!

Since we didn’t have that much lead time, the bike I raced was basically stock with only a few mild modifications. Of course, there was an FMF Racing Fatty Pipe and Shorty Silencer on the bike, and that brought the powerband to life and also gave the bike an awesome exhaust note. The intake was complemented with a Boyesen Rad Valve, and a Boyesen Super Cooler helped keep the bike cool while I was ri[pping up the big Glen Helen uphills! We also bolted on one of the cool new Works Edition Factory Racing billet clutch covers from Boyesen because the stock cover was really beat. One thing that I was really surprised about was the performance of the Yamaha’s stock Kayaba suspension! I raced on bone-stock fork and shock, and though I had to try a little harder than my competitors, it worked just fine.

With only one day to learn the bike and get used to it, I was able to race to third overall with 4-3 moto scores! The bike was super dialed in and I haven’t had that much fun racing in a long time! Before the race, my dad said to me, “I’m cool if you get a top 10 finish because you’re on the most basic bike out there and all of your competition are on full race machines. I said, “Watch this pop,” and I went out there and rode my butt off. All in all, the trip was a surreal experience and I look forward to doing it again in the future! Thanks, guys!
