Time for GoPro videos from the 2020 Salt Lake City Three Supercross. The revolutionary camera company is back on board as a sponsor to the Monster Energy Supercross Series and key riders in the field, which means we’ll get plenty of point of view footage through the seventeen-round championship. Here are clips from Vince and Ken Roczen’s perspective at the mud race in SLC.

KEN ROCZEN | 450 HEAT RACE ONE

We always say how important starts are, but that was especially true at SLC Three because the ruts just after the gates were full of water that splashed up and onto riders as soon as the moto began. Roczen got a good drive off the line and shot a quick glance to his left to see where Cooper Webb was, a smart move that got the Team Honda HRC rider ready for the first turn. A high line through the bowl berm/finish line jump face by Roczen allowed Webb to go low and take the lead, which set the two rivals up for another battle.

Roczen’s whoop speed has been stellar here in Utah and his ability to skim the rollers helped him stay close to Webb in the early laps. That was one of the few places on the track riders were able to stay in a straight line all the way through, and in this video you can see how much Roczen moved between ruts in the rhythm lanes.

A flat tire in the closing laps of the race zapped Roczen’s pace and he coasted the bike home to keep it from damaging the wheel.

VINCE FRIESE | 450 HEAT RACE TWO

Vince Friese’s starting skills are some of the best in the 450 Class and the SmarTop/Bullfrog Spas/MotoConcepts/Honda rider showed that in the run to turn one in his Heat Race. Although he wasn’t the first to the turn, Friese chopped the throttle early, let the other riders charge up to the bowl turn, and took an inside line to cut underneath them. It was a good move that put him just behind leader Zach Osborne as they went through the first lane of obstacles.

The track was a challenge for everyone and Friese had his own struggles trying to navigate the endless ruts and water-logged jump transitions, which is evident in his multiple line changes. One thing we’re bummed that the GoPro footage didn’t show was his battle with Justin Barcia. The two old foes found each other early in the race and one of their block pass exchanges put Barcia in the Tuff Blocks; the Monster Energy Yamaha Factory Racing rider regrouped and caught Friese later on, something we see in this video.
