2024 SUPERCROSS CHAMPIONSHIP | COMPLETE COVERAGE

Motorcycle manufacturers, apparel companies, and hard part producers all spend considerable portions of their budgets on sponsorships for the top riders, so this breakdown of the 450 Class in the 2024 Monster Energy Supercross Championship gives an idea of how important brand recognition is at the highest level of our sport. The first recap under each rider’s name goes over the motorcycle manufacturer, suspension, handlebars, exhaust, and tires; the second covers gear, helmets, goggles, and boots.

Is your favorite brand as popular as you might think? Take a look at the lists below and scroll to the bottom for the grand totals.

Motorcycle

Kawasaki – 6
Honda – 6

KTM – 5
Yamaha – 4
Suzuki – 4
GASGAS – 3
Husqvarna – 2
Beta – 1

Kawasaki and Honda tied for the top spot in the motorcycle category. The two Japanese OEMs got six bikes on the list the same way: factory-run operations (Monster Energy Kawaskai and Team Honda HRC), four independent teams (Phoenix Racing and MotoConcepts, PRMX and MADD Parts), and two privateers (Jason Clermont and Luke Kalaitzian).

The PIERER Mobility Group’s three brands make up nearly a third of the list when the numbers for KTM/GASGAS/Husqvarna are combined.

Suzuki and Yamaha are solely represented by the OEM supported teams of HEP Motorsports, BARX, Star Racing, and Rock River.

Beta making the list in its maiden season takes the OEM total to eight.

Handlebars

Renthal – 10
ODI – 9
ProTaper – 5
Mika Metals – 5
SCAR – 1
Psychic – 1

Rental retains its rank as the handlebar of choice for most of the factory teams (Team Honda HRC, Monster Energy Kawasaki, Red Bull KTM, and Troy Lee Designs/Red Bull/GASGAS Factory Racing), plus Team Tedder and one division of HEP Motorsports.

ODI has hopped to a close second on the list through sponsorship of multiple B-level teams (Phoenix Racing, Fire Power, MotoConcepts, PRMX, Next Level Racing, Rock River).

ProTaper and Mika Metals are split at five riders each. ProTaper has deals with Monster Energy/Star Racing/Yamaha and Rockstar Energy/Husqvarna Factory Racing, while Mika Metals has deals with Liqui Moly/Beta Factory Racing, AJE Motorsports, BARX, and a wing of HEP Motorsports.

SCAR and Psychic are represented by Jason Clermont and Freddie Noren, respectively.

Exhaust

FMF Racing – 10
Pro Circuit – 6
Akrapovic – 6
Yoshimura – 3
Bill’s Pipes – 2
HGS – 2
Stock – 2

Support of multiple teams (Star Racing, factory Husqvarna, MADD Parts, AJE Motorsports, BARX) puts FMF Racing at the top of the exhaust category.

Pro Circuit and Akrapovic are tied for second with six riders each. Pro Circuit pieces are on both factory Kawasakis, the three Suzukis fielded by HEP Motorsports, and Team Tedder’s KTM, while Akrapovic pipes are on the factory KTM and GASGAS bikes, the MCR Honda, and Tristan Lane’s privateer KTM.

All three of the Yoshimura systems are mounted to CRF450Rs: the two factory bikes ridden by the Lawrence brothers and Kalaitzian’s privateer entry.

Bill’s Pipes, HGS, and the OE systems complete the list, but it’s hard not to give HGS another nod, as the European brand makes the stock header and muffler for Beta.

Suspension

KYB – 11
Showa – 11
WP – 9

Anything goes in suspension now, and multiple teams and riders have changed parts in their search for the ideal setting.

Showa’s role as a component supplier to two motorcycle manufacturers is a big deal. It got its goods on the Honda and Kawasaki factory bikes, plus use by Roczen, Ferrandis, Drake, Wilson, Friese, Noren, and Clermont.

KYB is also on eleven bikes, including the four Yamahas, but the rest comes from the aftermarket. McElrath and Chisholm’s Suzuki RM-Zs have KYB kits set up by Active Ride, while parts made by enzo racing encouraged a handful of KTM-mounted privateers to convert.

All of the factory teams for the European bike brands utilize WP, and PRMX switched to sticks and shocks tuned by TCD.

Tires

Dunlop – 22
Pirelli – 6

Maxxis – 3

Once again, Dunlop is the undisputed leader in the tire category. Pirelli maintains a place in the pits with various riders and teams, and Maxxis is making another push with sponsorship of MADD Parts and PRMX.

Gear

Alpinestars – 6
FLY Racing – 5

THOR – 3
Fox Racing – 3
FXR – 2
O’Neal – 2
SHOT – 2
Pure Adrenaline – 2
Seven – 1
Aektiv – 1
Circuit – 1
Canvas – 1
Troy Lee Designs – 1
Fasthouse – 1

Seeing what gear is worn by whom is how the idea for this feature first came about, and with a staggering fourteen brands listed, it’s a gauge for Moto’s fads and marketing strategies.

Alpinestars is at the top of the list with a stacked six-rider roster of Lawrence/Sexton/Anderson/Tomac/Lawrence/Cooper. FLY Racing is a close second through deals with HEP Motorsports that got them McElrath/Chisholm, Fire Power Honda for Wilson, BARX for Drake, and privateer Clermont.

Industry-leading brands are well represented. THOR and Fox Racing have three riders a piece (Plessinger/Webb/Prado and Roczen/Craig/Cianciarulo), FXR and O’Neal have two (Bloss/Simonson and Ferrandis/Kalaitzian), while Seven, Troy Lee Designs, and Fasthouse have one each (Stewart, Barcia, Hill).

Advancements in production and connections within the pits helped brands like SHOT, Pure Adrenaline, Aektiv, Circuit, and Canvas make significant strides in a very competitive category over the past decade, and the smaller brands are now well represented by independent teams and privateers.

Helmet

Alpinestars – 5
FLY Racing – 5

Bell – 4
6D – 4
Arai – 4
Fox Racing – 3
Airoh – 2
HJC – 1
Troy Lee Designs – 1
Suomy – 1
Shoei – 1

Advancements in rotational impact management, safety features, and adaptive technology have greatly influenced the helmet category. A company’s simultaneous needs for a high-end helmet in the catalog and an elite racer wearing it is how apparel makers Alpinestars and FLY Racing overtook specialist brands like Bell, 6D, and Arai, and Fox Racing isn’t far off when it comes to representation.

Airoh, HJC, Troy Lee Designs, Suomy, and Shoei add to the overall number.

Goggles

Oakley – 6
EKS Brand – 6

100% – 4
SCOTT – 3
Fox Racing – 3
FLY Racing – 2
Viral – 2
Factory Ride – 1
Blur – 1
VonZipper – 1
Alpinestars – 1
BC – 1

There were a handful of sponsorship changes in eyewear during the offseason, as Oakley and EKS Brand picked up a few riders from 100%’s pared-down roster. The two very different companies (a multi-national empire runs one, and the other is family-owned) are now tied for the top spot. EKS Brand’s on-track number is technically the biggest, thanks to their private label products for FXR’s Factory Ride and Alpinestars.

100%, SCOTT, Fox Racing, and FLY Racing are competing brands with distinct initiatives. Goggles are what 100% and SCOTT are known for, while Fox Racing and FLY Racing use them to get head-to-toe branding on a rider. Either way, the four look after nearly half the list.

Former pro racer Scott Steffy owns Viral, Blur is part of O’Neal, VonZipper is connected to Fasthouse, and BC is run by a young entrepreneur from California.

Boots

Alpinestars – 22
Fox Racing – 3

Gaerne – 2
SiDi – 2
Leatt – 2

As usual, Alpinestars has the most boots on track, and by a lot. Fox Racing is second on the list with three, while Gaerne, SiDi, and Leatt are all worn by two riders.

Gloves

FIST – 4
Deft – 1

Five – 1

We added the gloves for one reason: about a fifth of the list wears mitts made by someone other than their gear brand. Australian company FIST has Noren/Clason/Politelli/Harrison, category creator Deft has Friese, and French company Five has Ferrandis.

Neck Brace

Atlas – 1

Kyle Chisholm is the only neck brace-wearing rider to score championship points thus far in 2024.
