Kurt will always be a hero and a legend in the sport. Out here in Vegas, my club has been hosting a round of the NHHA every year a couple hours outside of town, this is how I was able to meet him.
He came to the spaghetti dinner hosted by the small host town’s local junior women’s basketball team. He was giving out autographs, talking with the kids and taking pics for the young ones who idolized him. He stayed late that night before the race because the kids just followed him everywhere and barraged him with questions.
I was lucky enough to be the one who marked the nasty part of the course where Kurt lost his GoPro. So, the pres. of my club sent me into the nasty tree and rock waterfall laden section. After about 45 minutes on foot crawling through terrain most guys wouldn’t willfully ride through, I found it laying on the ground below an entirely too low hanging branch. Before sending it back to them, my buddies and I all watched the footage leading up to the GoPro’s dismount. He was hitting sections faster than any of us would, one-handed wiping his goggles, checking out the scenery and just making it look like he was literally on rails. This is obviously way before the new smooth film we get from GoPro’s and you could not even tell how deep any of the sand whoops or g-outs were. Just incredible. As far as I know, this was the last race he won on American soil.
After we returned his GoPro, he sent our club a signed #1 jersey and a bunch of stuff for our club’s kids. I’m not sure there will ever be another guy like him in our sport and the things the KCF does just continues to push that energy and spirit forward.
If anyone took the time to read this, thank you, and come out to southern NV’s NHHA race, see the signed jersey, have some spaghetti with the kids and make Kurt proud.
