Ripping ruts. As cool as it is to see pro guys fly through the air over triples and skim whoop pads, we’re most impressed by the way riders are able to carry so much speed through rutted bowl turns. Getting through slot-car like sections is something Alex Martin excels at, as he’s able to carry momentum through the corners and into the next section of track. What’s the speed secret? Like anything, you’ll want to maintain proper technique and attack with confidence and commitment. We’ll let AMart take it from here…

“Sometimes I have a tendency to charge too aggressively into a corner and then when I get into the corner, I have to get on the brakes heavy.”

“With this turn, I wanted to make sure I came into it hot and once I was in the rut, I was off of the brakes. When you’re on the brakes in a rut, the bike has a tendency to stand straight up. So, if you want a good lean angle in a corner, you have to be off the gas or just applying the throttle very lightly.”

“A lot of times during practice when I’m behind guys like Forkner or Ferrandis, I notice how early they are applying the gas in corners. They get on the throttle really well and smoothly, and that’s what allows them to get the drive.”

“If you get through the corner without a problem, then you’re able to attack the next section of the track better. With this corner in particular, how soon we were able to get on the gas and out of the corner determined our run over the whoops, which was really crucial.”

“You have to be pretty precise and maintain a neutral body position, and not have a leg dangling down that could get caught in the rut. Come into the corner with confidence, because you have to be ready and don’t want to second-guess your line choices.”
